Press 0 in voicemail to record your own greeting, hear it back, and keep it or try again.
You can now record your voicemail greeting from the phone on your desk.
How
- Dial *97, as if to check messages.
- Press 0 for mailbox options.
- Speak after the tone and press # when you are done.
- You hear it played back.
- Press 1 to keep it, 2 to hear it again, 3 to record again.
Nothing is saved until you press 1. That is a mercy for those of us who need a few takes, cough halfway through, or get interrupted by a colleague.
Before this
A greeting had to be recorded somewhere else, saved as a file, uploaded to the audio library by an administrator, and assigned to the extension. For one person that is a chore. For an office of thirty it does not happen, and thirty people have the same beep for a greeting.
Which greeting plays
Your own recording, if you have made one. Otherwise the one an administrator picked for you from the library. Otherwise a tone. You can remove your recording from the Voicemail page and go back to the default.
Why this small thing took thought
Recording by phone means the call service writes a file. Until now only the web pages wrote to the library, and the call service only read. Keeping it that way mattered, so a recorded greeting is simply a file kept beside the mailbox, and the library stays under one owner.
Tips for a good greeting
Say your name, say when you will call back, and stop. Fifteen seconds is plenty. Stand up while you record it; it really does sound better.
