A new name: Kahevo

Pidgin Talk has outgrown its name. Meet Kahevo: kāhea, plus voice, with a hint of evolution.

Pidgin Talk was named for a small job: ten phones and nothing fancy. It does a good deal more than that now, and it deserves a name of its own.

It is now Kahevo.

Where the name comes from

Kāhea is the Hawaiian word for a call: the kind you make with your voice to bring someone in, to greet them, to ask them to come. It is the oldest kind of call there is, and it is still what a phone is for.

Add voice, and a hint of evolution, and you have Kahevo.

Why change it

Three years ago the project had one job and a joke of a name. Since then it has picked up, in rough order:

  • voicemail, menus and ring groups,
  • a phone in the browser,
  • wideband sound and encrypted calls,
  • call park, phone keys and busy lights,
  • business hours and holidays,
  • recording, contacts and intercom,
  • a live dashboard and searchable logs.

That is not a side project for ten phones any more. It is a phone system an office can run on, and one other IT companies have started asking about.

What stays the same

Everything that matters. No license to renew. No count of users or of calls. Your server, your provider, your customers. The same people in the same office in Honolulu.

What changes

The name on the sign-in page, and the name on these posts. If you see "Pidgin" in a corner somewhere, it is a fond leftover, not a mistake.

Same promise. New name on the door.
