Sign in to the web page and take calls right there, no desk phone needed.
You can now make and take calls from the web page itself, with a headset and nothing else.
What it is
A small phone panel sits on every page once you sign in: a keypad, a call button, and buttons for mute, hold and transfer. It registers as one more device on your extension, so it rings alongside your desk phone, and whichever you answer first wins.
Nothing to install. It uses the calling ability already built into modern browsers.
It survives moving around
The first version had a habit of hanging up on us. Loading a new page ends everything that page was doing, including a call.
So moving between pages no longer loads a new page. The part of the screen that changes is swapped in place and the phone panel stays where it is. If you try to leave the site altogether during a call, the browser asks first.
Keys and menus
Pressing a digit during a call sends it the same way a desk phone does, so menus and voicemail work from the browser with no special handling.
What it needs
- A microphone, and your permission to use it. Without one it can still listen.
- A secure connection. Browsers only allow microphone access over HTTPS.
- A path to the server's audio ports, which matters for people working outside the office.
Who it is for
The person working from home on a laptop. The new hire whose desk phone has not arrived. The office that would rather buy headsets than phones. It is the same extension either way, with the same voicemail and the same call log.
